Hockey, skiing, 55+ curling update in Friday local sports

Storm

The Grande Prairie Storm will finish the 2024 portion of their schedule with a three game road trip down south.

The Storm will visit Calgary Friday, Canmore Saturday, and Calgary again on Sunday.

The first two games start at 7 p.m. The Sunday game will start at 2 p.m.

The Storm go into the weekend in second place in the North Division with 38 points, six back of first-place Whitecourt but with four games in hand.

The Wolverines are home to Fort McMurray Saturday in their lone game this weekend.

After Sunday, the Storm will be off until the weekend of January 3.

NWJHL

There are two games in the Strike Group North West Junior Hockey League Friday.

Sexsmith will be in Beaverlodge and Peace River in Fairview.

Saturday; Dawson Creek will be at the Wheat Kings, Beaverlodge in Fairview, La Crete in Sexsmith, and Fort St. John in Peace River. Those games will all start at 8 p.m.

Sunday, La Crete is in Dawson Creek for a 2 p.m. start.

After these games, the schedule will resume January 3.

NPHL

In the North Peace Hockey League Friday, Valleyview is in Grande Prairie and High Prairie in Manning.

Saturday, Grande Prairie travels to Dawson Creek, Spirit River in Falher, and Fox Creek in High Prairie.

All games start at 8:30 p.m.

The NPHL schedule also resumes January 3 after this weekend.

Last night (Thursday), the home teams won both games. Spirit River beat Dawson Creek 2-1 while Fox Creek edged Falher 6-5.

Skiing

Nitehawk is open Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Tube Zone will be open from 5-7 p.m. and 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, noon-2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Whispering Pines Ski Hill is open every day from Friday, December 20 through January 5, except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

The rental shop opens at 9 a.m.

Sunday will be opening day at Fairview Ski Hill.

Curling

55+ drop-in senior curling at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre is taking a break for Christmas and New Years.

It will resume January 7, with an extra day added because of popular demand.

It will now go every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Games start at 9:30 a.m. Players are asked to show up early to register.

The cost is $5 per game.
