Two men arrested on warrants after fleeing traffic stop in Northern Sunrise County

On December 5, 2024, Peace Regional RCMP patrolling in Northern Sunrise County attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle fled the scene, but was located a short time after by members of the Western Alberta Crime Reduction Unit and a foot search ended with finding the vehicles occupants in a forested farm area.

As a result of this incident, 49-year-old Richard James William Frey of Northern Sunrise County was located and charged with:

  • Alter, remove or obliterate a vehicle identification number on a motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Resist a Police Officer
  • Fail to comply with release conditions
  • Fraudulent concealment
  • Warrant: Drive while unauthorized
  • Warrant: Fail to comply with release conditions
  • Warrant: Dangerous operation of motor vehicle

Another Northern Sunrise County resident, Cory John Zeller was also located and chared with:

  • Fail to comply with release conditions
  • Flight from Police Officer
  • Warrant: Assault on Police Officer x 2
  • Warrant: Alter, remove or obliterate a vehicle identification number on a motor vehicle
  • Warrant: Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
  • Warrant: Flight from Police Officer
  • Warrant: Fail to Comply with release conditions

Frey and Zeller were held for a Judicial Interim Hearing, and were both remanded into custody. They have a court date in Peace River on December 23, 2024.
