Mayor of Grande Prairie reflecting on 2024

Dec 27, 2024 | 3:56 PM

Grande Prairie’s mayor is calling 2024 a year of hard work, growth, and restructuring.

In particular, Jackie Clayton highlighted the growth of Grande Prairie Police Service.

“We’re starting to see the numbers grow in regard to experienced recruits, as well as the first class of inexperienced recruits going to receive their formal training,” Clayton says. “By mid year of 2025 we will see a significant number of Grande Prairie Police Service members.”

Clayton says the biggest challenge in 2024 was communication and making sure accurate information was being shared with their partners and residents.

“Because we do believe Grande Prairie has so much to offer,” she says. “It is a great place to live. Putting that time and effort in to tell the story better, and tweak areas where there was improvement needed. Council will continue to work hard in 2025 for initiatives identified in out strategic plan, but we really believe in what is possible.”

She says she is looking forward to seeing the Alberta Special Olympics coming to Grande Prairie in 2025.

“We know that through the efforts that we’ve done over the last year and a half we’ve seen growth in regard to the number of specialists who signed on with the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital,” she says. “We’re going to take that one step further with ambassadors who are not only going to support the initiative methods, but they are also going to embrace those who move here.”

Other highlights from Mayor Clayton include Grande Prairie hosting the Alberta Winter Games, the unveiling of Tenille Townes Way, and the completion of the new connector trail joining the City and County of Grande Prairie together.
