Unemployment at 3.7 per cent in Grande Prairie to end 2024

In Statistics Canada’s December Labour force characteristics survey, the unemployment rate in the economic region that includes Grande Prairie fell 1.1 per cent from August to December 2024.

The Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River region sat at 3.7 per cent for unemployment to end the year. The rate dropped 1.0 per cent from the beginning of the year.

The employment rate for the Grande Prairie economic region in December was 67.6 per cent, down from 68.9 per cent in January 2024. The highest employment rate last year was in July at 72.4 per cent.

In Alberta, the employment rate was 64.3 per cent in December, down slightly from the start of 2024 which was at 64.6 per cent.

Estimates from Statstics Canada’s Labour Market Indicators show the Grande Prairie region gained 8,000 people aged 15 or older last year. The participation rate was 70.4 per cent in December, which dipped from 72.3 per cent in January. The highest participation rate was in August at 76.1 per cent.

Overall employment increased in 2024, with the Grande Prairie economic region gaining 1,800 jobs from start to finish.
