Mackenzie Region the Forest Capital of Canada for second straight year

Jan 18, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The Mackenzie Region is serving as the Forest Capital of Canada in 2025, and officials say they are “delighted” to be holding the title for the second straight year.

A release says the designation “celebrates communities or regions for their connectivity to the forest.”

That same release also says about 70 per cent of the area’s residents work in, rely on or are somehow involved with the forest.

Officials say the Boris the Spruce Tree mascot may be what they call “the most endearing legacy initiative.”

Boris hosts what is termed “an online interactive adventure” that includes both actual footage from the area and animation.

“Looking to the future, we’d like to see the Boris brand become an integral part of our region. In the meantime, we have a lot more to come. We’re planning more Boris adventures and more education opportunities to share with Alberta and the rest of Canada,” says FCC co-chair Lisa Wardley.

Grande Prairie served as the Forest Capital of Canada in 1997.
