Final three decided at Alberta men’s curling championship

UPDATE: Evan Van Amsterdam will play Kevin Koe to decided the Alberta men’s curling champion and this province’s representative at the Brier.

Van Amsterdam defeated the Daylen Vavrek rink from Sexsmith 5-1 in Sunday morning’s semi-final.

Van Amsterdam scored a deuce in the seventh end, then sealed the win with stolen singles in the eighth and ninth ends.

The three teams left in the chase at the Alberta men’s curling championship all have some connection to the Peace.

In the semi-final Sunday morning at 10 a.m., the Daylen Vavrek rink from Sexsmith will play the Evan Van Amsterdam team from Edmonton.

Vavrek beat Edmonton’s Jacob Libbus 6-3 in the 3/4 Page playoff game.

Van Amsterdam lost the 1/2 game to Kevin Koe’s Calgary-based team 6-4.

The Van Amsterdam team includes two players originally from the B.C. Peace, Sterling Middleton and Jason Ginter. Koe is a former resident of Grande Prairie.

Koe will play the winner of the semi-final match-up at 3 p.m. Sunday to decide the Alberta champion and this province’s representative at the Brier.
