Alberta enters wildfire season with significant drop from last year

Mar 2, 2025 | 2:11 PM

Wildfire season has officially begun in Alberta as of Saturday.

Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen said the province is entering the season with 10 active fires, which he notes is a significant drop from the almost 60 wildfires at this time last year.

Loewen credits that to Alberta’s wildland firefighters and support teams, as well as the resilience of Alberta’s communities, and to what he calls the province’s historic investments, preparations and quick response to last year’s wildfires.

He said fireguard projects are currently underway in the Bow Valley near Canmore, as well as Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Hinton, Whitecourt and Slave Lake.
