Swan City Rotary Club presents cheques for Cars for Christmas lottery campaign

Mar 6, 2025 | 12:00 PM

The Swan City Rotary Club presented the cheques for its annual Cars for Christmas campaign Wednesday.

The annual fundraiser has people purchasing lottery tickets in an effort to win a new car, with the proceeds going to local non-profits.

Lottery Committee Chair Sean Gray says they raised over $430,000 this year.

“We’re able to provide all kinds of sponsorships and provide funding for 13 local non-profit groups directly,” Gray says. “With all the Rotary Clubs in Grande Prairie we all work together in our lotteries now, so there’s a whole bunch extra to go out to other initiatives.”

He adds sales were lower than previous years.

“People are concerned financially. It’s been a lot of up and downs with the United States and stuff like that, a lot of inflation. I think people are nervous.”

The money given to the non-profits is made up of funds raised from the tickets sales, as well as donations from local businesses including Grande Prairie’s Pattison Media radio stations.

Rewind Radio donated to the Piranhas Swim Club, while Big Country donated to the Grande Prairie Council on Aging.

Council on Aging Executive Director Tyla Savard says the funds will go towards several programs including their volunteer appreciation, Seniors Week, and their recently launched Senior’s Social Time.

“They can come in and not be so isolated, but just have that development of new friendships,” Savard says. “Maybe they just want to sit and have a coffee, maybe they want to do crib, maybe they want to bring in a speaker. But have it be led by them with our support. And just again, have them be a part of the community, and have the community be a part of our organization that much more.”

Swan City Rotary Club is already gearing up for the spring lottery launching in a few days.
