From dirt to door: BILD Alberta demystifying homebuilding and its affordability
The Building Industry and Land Development Association Alberta (BILD Alberta) has launched a public awareness campaign, “Unlock Housing,” to take Albertans behind the scenes on how homes and communities are built, from dirt to door.
BILD Alberta says our province leads the country in new home construction. Despite this fact, along with industry efforts to reduce delivery times, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) estimates the province is still short 130,000 homes. Additionally, 94 per cent of Albertans agree that we’re facing a housing and affordability crisis.
“The average Albertan does not see what determines the final price tag of their home or their monthly rent,” says Scott Fash, CEO of BILD Alberta. “Affordability is shaped by everything that happens before, during, and after a home is built. From planning approvals to engineering, servicing, and construction, every step involves decisions that directly impact the cost of housing. Unlock Housing will help Albertans see the full picture, including the barriers that impact affordability and what can be done to address them.”
Over the last 20 years, the time and cost required to build a home has greatly increased, resulting in challenges and barriers. This awareness campaign hopes to bring these challenges to light and reveal how housing affordability is influenced long before a home hits the market.
