Cedar Point operating at full capacity, has high rate of people going to independent living, says official

Cedar Point, the housing support facility for Grande Prairie’s homeless population, is operating at near capacity.

It has 50 people staying there currently. There is room for 64.

The Mustard Seed community development specialist Kendra Sledding says they have seen what she calls “positive impacts with the residents.”

“It’s been a challenge for some folks because change isn’t easy. While we don’t force anything, we don’t have a mandated program perhaps, but we encourage participation in different activities.”

“Some of them have higher needs than others. Some situations are very complex for them, a lot of trauma to work through, so it takes time.”

Sledding says they have had some people move on to regular housing. She says their goal is to help these people to find “independent living for themselves.”

She adds Cedar Point moved on to independent living.

“The average for other agencies is far less than that, perhaps five per cent would be considered a good number, but we’re around 14 per cent so we’re super excited about that.”

“We don’t want just to be sheltering people forever. We really see a healthy community is when our folks can be sustained in their own home in their own community.”

Sledding says Cedar Point having 50 residents means these 50 people are not on the street.

“They’re in a safe environment where they can work towards their goals and work on their health and well-being.”

“We know we have others that are not yet part of the program that might be able to become part of our program one day as we see our residents graduate. Perhaps some of them might graduate up into one of the 43 units of affordable housing that’s opening up.”

Sledding says those 43 units are located on the top floor of Cedar Point. They are for single adults. A property manager is taking applications and interviewing applicants. Sledding says they are hoping these will be filled soon.

Cedar Point is located in the former Stonebridge Hotel. Ii was known as the Coordinated Care Campus at first.

City Hall says the final cost of the project was $24,170,131.

The Mustard Seed took over operation of the facility about a year ago.

Sledding was part of one of the panels at the recent State of the City presentations.
