Games Manager Lisa Kerkhof says we are now less then 100 days away from the game’s kickoff.

“We’re starting to see a little bit of spring and summer weather, and people are starting to think about the summer,” Kerkhof says. “We wanted to get that official kick off to the games on the radar. We’ve also just recently hired three athletes to be ambassadors to the games, and so, this is giving them a chance to share their story with the community and get there names out there with the public eye.”

Kerkhof says they have three full time ambassadors, who will also be competing in the games, as well as one honorary ambassador.

“They’re all local to Grande Prairie and three of them will be participating this summer,” says Kerkhof. “So, Steven is in Golf, Kayley will be doing bocce, and Savanna is in swimming. They’ve been in Special Olympics from 12 to 15 years up until now, so it’s really exciting to see them come full circle and be able to show of their city to their friends from around the community.”

Steven Biendarra is one of the games’ ambassadors, he will be competing in golf and has played the sport since 2017.

“Everyone get ready!” Says Biendarra. “It’s going to be a fun year, winning medals and also having a good time at the Special Olympics. You meet good people, you have good fun, and also a good environment to have a good spot in your time!”

The Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games will take place in Grande Prairie from July 11 to 13, offering free admission to all sporting events.
