Apr 11, 2025 | 3:38 PM

After the World Professional Chuckwagon Association tarp auction for Stompede broke records, the auction for the Calgary Stampede’s Rangeland Derby did the same.

This year’s sale saw the highest-ever average bid at $142,222.22, with all but three of the 27 tarps selling for at least $100,000.

The sale total of $3.84 million was the third highest ever.

Defending champion Jason Glass had the highest bid at $230,000.

“With what’s going on in the world today, it’s amazing that the sport of chuckwagon racing has the support of Alberta and the local community and companies. It’s been ongoing for a lot of years,” Glass told Arnie Jackson at the sale.

The next highest bids were $220,000 for Kurt Bensmiller, $210,000 for Kris Molle and $190,000 for Layne MacGillvray.

Chanse Vigen had the highest sale for drivers with connections to the Peace at $150,000. Next came Dayton and Mitch Sutherland at $135,000 each, and Cody Ridsdale at $130,000.

This year’s Calgary Stampede will run from July 4 to 13.
