UPDATED – As of 5:30 p.m. on April 20, a wildfire (GWF007) in the Grande Prairie Forest Area has been downgraded to under control. The fire is located south of Highway 49, about 35 km southwest of Spirit River.

A fire broke out on the south side of the Dunvegan bridge (GWF005) on Friday, April 18. It is located west of Highway 2 and is estimated at 4.90 hectares. It is now extinguished.

No communities are threatened by these two blazes. Stay up to date on wildfires around the province with the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard.

Fire watchers say there is a moderate wildfire danger rating in the GPFA and is anticipated to increase as the snow melts and dry, dead grass and vegetation becomes exposed.

A fire advisory is in effect for the Grande Prairie Forest Area due to warm, windy conditions and the dry grass hazard. The fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.

  • Existing fire permits remain valid
  • New permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis.
  • Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited.
