UPDATE: One fatality in Highway 43 collision

Update at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22:

The Valleyview RCMP would like to let the public know that Highway 43 has reopened for travel.

Police investigation has revealed a cyclist was in the middle of a westbound lane and was not seen by a semi-truck driver until it was too late. The semi did try to avoid the cyclist, but was unfortunately unable to do so.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and charges are not currently being sought in regards to this incident.

The Alberta RCMP would like to extend their condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.

The Valleyview RCMP say they are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 43, west of Valleyview, near Range Road 230.

In an email sent after midnight on April 22, Mounties say Highway 43 Westbound will be closed in the area while emergency personnel respond and an investigation takes place.

The public is asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes of travel, should travel be necessary.

The Everything GP Newsroom is expecting an update from police on when the highway reopens or when more information is available.
