Grande Prairie Liberal candidate pleased with national result

While she did not win in her riding, Grande Prairie Liberal candidate Maureen McLeod says she is pleased with the national result for her party.

“We, the Liberals, maybe the Mark Carney effect, (has) increased our percentage of the vote (in this area), from the last election, which I thought was a really good result, so I’m pleased with that.”

The Liberals captured close to 12 per cent of the vote in this election and ran second compared to 4.5 per cent and finishing fourth overall in 2021.

McLeod says she is not surprised Chris Warkentin and the Conservatives won in Grande Prairie.

“Pretty obvious, being a very Conservative area of Alberta. I went into it with my eyes open, let’s put it that way, with no illusions.”

“The welcome I got from the Liberals themselves in the area was great. They seem very enthusiastic about continuing on.”

McLeod says if there is a minority government and another election soon, she would think about running again.

“I have to think about it. I was hoping to get a very solid group of other Liberals up there who might be able to think about running as well.”

“I wouldn’t like to (hurt) anybody else’s chances for running, but I could probably do it again. I think I have enough energy.

McLeod ran second behind Warkentin. New Democrat Jennifer Villebrun finished third, then came Shawn McLean with the People’s Party of Canada, Donovan Eckstrom with the Rhinoceros Party and Independent Elliot McDavid.

Warkentin captured over 80 per cent of the vote.
