May 6, 2025 | 12:33 PM

County of Grande Prairie Council met on Monday to discuss a number of agenda items, including paving contracts being awarded and a provincial grant application for a regional FireSmart Coordinator position.

FireSmart Coordinator position application

County Council directed Administration to apply for the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) grant of $200,000 for a regional FireSmart Coordinator position. It would be for a two-year term and in partnership with regional municipalities.

The County would potentially contribute up to $22,500 this year, $55,000 in 2026, and $22,500 in 2027, if the grant goes through.

If approved, Council has asked Administration to bring back an evaluation of the position at the end of the term.

Road base paving contracts awarded

Two contracts have been awarded for two separate paving projects in the County.

Knelsen Sand and Gravel has been awarded a tender of $1,894,513.66, excluding GST, for the Range Road 100 base paving contract, from Highway 667 to Highway 43.

Wapiti Gravel Suppliers Ltd. has been awarded the tender of $1,023,969.24, excluding GST, for the Range Road 61 base paving contract, from Highway 668 south 1.1 kilometres to the Big Mountain Haul Road.

Letters of support for Hythe Athletic Association

Council has asked Administration to provide letters of support for a provincial grant application by the Hythe Athletic Association.

The grant application is for the provincial government’s Community Facility Enhancement Program.

The money if awarded, would be used for the replacement of brine lines at the Hythe Memorial Arena and Peace Area Motor Sports Association for upgrades to the Hythe Motor Speedway.

Road closure near Goodfare

Final reading by council was given to Bylaw #3247 – Road Closure of Road Plan 863 EU, within a property located approximately 2.05 miles south of the Hamlet of Goodfare, adjacent to Township Road 722 to the north and Range Road 121 to the east, for the purposes of re-aligning the road plan with the constructed road.

The next regular meeting of County Council will be on Tuesday, May 20.
