Emergency Preparation

May 9, 2025 | 1:57 PM

Disasters can strike at any time – and for horse owners, the stakes are even higher. Your horse’s safety depends on your readiness.

Whether it’s wildfires, floods, or severe storms, being prepared saves lives. While you can’t plan for every form of disaster, it’s important to familiarize yourself with potential risks in your area.

Planning ahead can allow you to stay composed and act quickly in an emergency.

To start with, map out the location of all dwellings and barns on your property, along with the number and type of livestock.

Make and practice emergency plans, including escape routes with room for any evacuated animals. Keep your plans in a prominent location, and choose emergency contacts who can help transport and shelter your animals if needed.

Keep a well-stocked emergency care kit – Greenhawk can help with Flexwrap, bandages, and ointments, and you should also include a flashlight, batteries, and records of your horse’s vaccinations, medications, and health issues.
