Farm groups calling for action from new federal cabinet

May 15, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Two farm groups have sent out releases welcoming the new federal cabinet.

In its release, the Grain Growers of Canada is urging the Liberal government to take quick action on three things: settling trade relationships with the U.S. and China, removing the carbon tax on all farm activities, and putting out a formal reversal of the capital gains tax increase.

GGC says this is needed “to grow Canada’s $45-billion grain export sector and secure the future of family-run grain farms.”

Grain Growers adds it wants these things looked at before the summer recess, adding; “swift action is needed to safeguard farmers bottom line, sustain Canada’s role as a reliable supplier of grain and grain products, and prevent further strain on the economy.”

The Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance, in a release of its own, says it wants ministers “to work in close consultation with exporters to protect and expand access to international markets and support the success of Canada’s agri-food sector.”
