High Level Forest Area wildfire fully extinguished after two years

May 22, 2025 | 3:03 PM

Alberta Wildfire is reporting that a High Level Forest Area fire that began in 2023 has been fully extinguished.

HtZ001 began burning along the Alberta-NWT border in 2023 on both sides of Highway 35, before a combined team of firefighters from Alberta, NWT and other provinces managed to bring it under control.

Underground hot spots remained and the wildfire was able to re-emerge in May 2024, where provincial and territorial crews battled it once again.

The fire was brighten under control again and firefighters have been working ever since to extinguish all remaining hot spots, finally fully extinguishing the fire.

The fire danger level remains high in the High Level Forest Area, in 2025 there have been 30 wildfires burning 70 hectares.
