GPFA wildfire danger level remains at very high as an active blaze continues to burn

May 23, 2025 | 3:06 PM

The wildfire danger level in the Grande Prairie Forest Area remains very high.

Alberta Wildfire is asking residents to use caution while outdoors this weekend, due to high forecasted temperatures and an ongoing wildfire burning 30 kilometres east of Bonanza.

That blaze is estimated to be 40 hectares in size and was detected yesterday (Thursday, May 22). Helicopters, heavy equipment and firefighters are working to contain it, and have slowed the progress “significantly,” thanks to a quick response from crews, and early detection by a lookout observer.

At this time, Alberta Wildfire says there is no threat to any infrastructure or communities.

An out of control wildfire that started today (Friday, May 23) in the High Level Forest Area has burned about 10 hectares so far.

Causes for this fire and the one in the Grande Prairie Forest Area are under investigation.

These are the only fires in Alberta considered out of control.

There is one fire listed as being held. It is located in the Peace River Forest Area and has burned an estimated 2259 hectares. Investigators say it was human caused.

With a fire restriction in effect, residents are reminded that all burning except for safe campfires on private land is prohibited, along with fireworks.
