Seeding progress ahead of averages but fields are getting dry

Jun 2, 2025 | 4:32 PM

The May 27 crop report from Alberta Agriculture and AFSC says 84.4 per cent of seeding of major crops in the Peace had been completed by that date.

The five-year average is 68.9 per cent. The 10-year average is 71.2 per cent.

Close to 97 per cent of the spring wheat, almost 95 per cent of the peas, 78 per cent of the oats, just under 78 per cent of the canola, and just under 76 per cent of the barley had been planted by the 27th.

Crop emergence in the Peace is at 64 per cent.

Province-wide, seeding is 90 per cent complete.

The report also says the warm weather means fields are drying out.

Grande Prairie had two millimetres of rain on Saturday, giving it six millimetres or just over two-tenths of rain for the entire month of May.

There were 1.3 millimetres or around one-half of one-tenth of rain on Sunday.
