Two year jail sentence for man charged after foiled theft, assault

Alberta Justice says a man charged after an incident in Grande Prairie where another man was stabbed in the arm when trying to stop a theft has been given a 24-month jail sentence.

Drake Giroux-Horseman was sentenced on a charge of aggravated assault, plus two others of mischief causing damage under $5,000, in late May in Grande Prairie court.

RCMP said at the time in the early morning of September 13, 2024, one man came across another man going through his vehicle.

The first man was stabbed during a struggle while trying to keep the suspect on the scene with what police described as an “unknown edged weapon.”

The suspect took off on a bicycle.

Giroux-Horseman was arrested on September 27, 2024, after what police called an “extensive investigation.”

Earlier in May, he had been given a sentence of time served after pleading guilty to a charge of theft over $5,000 in a separate arrest.

Giroux-Horseman was also due to stand trial in April on charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault in another case, but those charges were dismissed.

Trial dates set for man facing sexual assault, sexual contact with a minor charges

RCMP said at the time on March 8, 2024, at 11:30 p.m., the driver of a pickup sped away from an attempted traffic stop.

Police did not give chase. The same vehicle was located not long afterwards stuck in a snow bank.

EverythingGP is choosing not to use the man’s name because of a court-ordered publication ban the prohibits the publication of any information that could identify the victim.
