UPDATE:

Grande Prairie RCMP have provided an update on this morning’s fire at the Margarte Edgson Manor.

Mounties say they assisted in evacuating the apartment complex of more than 68 people, and so far only three minor injuries have been reported.

At this time, they are asking anyone with footage of the area around the time of the incident or anything of interest to contact the RCMP detachment at 780-830-5700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

An apartment fire in Grande Prairie’s Gateway subdivision has displaced an unknown number of residents for an unknown amount of time.

The city’s fire department responded to the blaze at Margaret Edgson Manor just after midnight. EMS and Grande Prairie RCMP also attended the scene and assisted with efforts where possible.

The fire was well-developed when crews arrived on scene and immediately started suppression efforts and evacuating the building, with several residents needing mobility assistance.

The fire has been brought under control, but was still active as of 5:00 a.m. according to the City in a social media post. Fire crews were said to be continuing suppression, secondary searches, and assisting with the retrieval of pets and essential medications for residents.

It is estimated that upwards of 40 residents have been displaced and will need temporary accommodations, but the total number of people impacted has not been confirmed.

Temporary shelter is being provided at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, where a number of residents were transported for injury assessments and treatment.

Local hotels are being contacted for longer-term accommodations, and the GPFD along with officials from the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership are working to help those displaced to find a place to call home for now.

The GPFD’s Fire Investigator says the the cause of the blaze is under investigation and are determining the origin and contributing factors. A department wide call-in to maintain emergency response coverage for the broader community has been initiated.

The City says there will be an update provided once more information becomes available.
