City Fire Ban downgraded to Fire Restriction

Jun 18, 2025 | 12:42 PM

The City of Grande Prairie’s fire ban has been downgraded to a fire restriction for all areas of the city, including annexed rural areas, due to improved, but still dry conditions.

Residents will once again be allowed to use:

  • Propane and natural gas barbecues, fire pits, and appliances
  • Wood pellet smokers and barbecues
  • Indoor wood fireplaces
  • Residental fire pits with screens or spark arrestors
  • Charcoal briquette barbecues
  • Open flame oil devices (ex. tiki torches)

Still prohibited are:

  • Burn barrels
  • Open burning of any kind
  • Safe wood campfires on public lands
  • Smudge fires
  • Residential fire pits without a spark arrestor or screen.

Fireworks are only allowed if you have obtained written authorization.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department’s Fire Marshal, Chris Renyk, asks residents to look around their homes for possible fire hazards, and to be careful when disposing of cigarette butts, as most fires are started due to improperly disposal.

The fire restriction will remain in effect until conditions improve.
