Summer Solstice & National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration set for Friday

The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre is hosting a Summer Solstice & National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration today (Friday, June 20).

The centre’s website says they will be “honouring the longest day of the year with a community gathering rooted in tradition and healing.”

The day starts at 9 a.m. with a pipe ceremony. Bannock tacos will be served at 11:30 then a learn to Pow Wow dance session is planned for 1-3 p.m.

Everything will take place at the Friendship Centre’s Traditional Healing Garden.

A parade that was to be held Saturday for National Indigenous Peoples Day has been cancelled.

The summer solstice will take place at 8:42 p.m. Friday Alberta time.
