Grande Prairie experiencing housing surge

Jul 3, 2025 | 11:11 AM

The City of Grande Prairie says it is experiencing a surge in housing construction.

$55.1 million in residential building permits have been recorded as of the end of June 2025, representing over 230 new housing units in various stages of construction.

The City says they have not seen a housing surge like this in a decade and that over 700 housing units are anticipated to start development by the end of the year.

At their meeting Monday, Council approved several amendments to the Municipal Fee Rebate program, including a funding increase from $1 million to $1.6 million.

The amendments will also reallocate unallocated funds from the Economic Recovery Fund, and the Development Incentives and Grants program, and all funds from the disbanded Training and Marketing Grants program.

This surge in housing reflects the confidence people and businesses have in Grande Prairie’s future. By expanding the Municipal Fee Rebate program, we’re not only supporting construction—we’re building community, expanding opportunity, and creating the conditions for residents to thrive. Jackie Clayton, Mayor of the City of Grande Prairie

Construction hub BILD GP says the rebate program has had a positive impact on the building community, and the City is showing the kind of leadership needed to keep projects moving and meet the urgent demand for new housing.
