Peace Region major crops struggling

Jul 3, 2025 | 12:21 PM

According to the most recent Alberta Crop report released on June 27, the Peace Region has the driest conditions in the entire province.

On top of dry conditions, the Peace is also struggling with major crops. Conditions declined by 2 per cent to 25 per cent since the previous report (June 17).

This is far below the 5-year average of 76 per cent and the 10-year average of 71 per cent.

The crop ratings for good to excellent in the Peace Region are:

  • Spring wheat – 22.1 per cent
  • Barley – 31.6 per cent
  • Oats – 28.4 per cent
  • Canola – 24.1 per cent
  • Dry peas – 26 per cent

Despite rainfall, surface and subsurface soil moisture have also declined in the Peace Region. Good to excellent ratings for surface moisture plummeted on June 17 at 45.6 per cent to 35.7 per cent on June 24. This was the same story for sub-surface soil moisture good to excellent ratings, which took a steep turn downwards from 53.5 per cent on June 17 to 43.1 per cent on June 24.

Tame hay and pasture conditions are also severely lacking, and well below historical averages due to uneven precipitation and prolonged moisture deficit. In the Peace, ratings are 26 per cent poor, 51.7 per cent fair, 21.7 per cent good, and 0.5 per cent excellent.

Pasture weed growth is also heavy in the Peace at 10 per cent, which is above the average.

The next Alberta crop report is set to be released on July 4.
