Change in beef check-off collection takes effect August 1

Jul 8, 2025 | 4:49 PM

Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off says some changes are coming on August 1 for how the levy is collected in Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan.

As of that date, the check-off will be based on where the person selling the livestock lives, not where the animals are sold.

Officials say this applies to auctions, dealers and farm-to-farm sales.

The amount charged in Alberta and BC will not change, but it will go to $5.25 a head from $4.50 for producers in Saskatchewan.

Alberta’s rate is $4.50 per animal, while in BC it is $5.00

Officials at the Canada Beef Check-Off Agency say this will help keep money in a producer’s home province, support compliance and promote consistency and transparency in the check-off system.
