City of Grande Prairie educating the public on Bylaw C-1103

Jul 10, 2025 | 1:10 PM

The City of Grande Prairie is reminding residents not to feed wild animals.

With the “feral rabbits” in Swanavon being a frequent topic at City Council over the last month, residents are being reminded of Bylaw C-1103, which forbids residents from feeding or leaving food outside for wild animals.

This bylaw applies to both private and public land, and includes all foods such as fruits, veggies and pellets; If something is left outside that begins to attract wildlife, it must be removed or modified within 24 hours.

According to the City, ignoring this bylaw can result in a fine or enforcement, as it can lead to overpopulation, dependency, increased disease spread, and attract predators.

However, this does not apply to bird feeders, as section (F) of Bylaw C-1103 makes an exception if they are stocked with only bird seed and are inaccessible to other wildlife.

In the release, the City said all residents play a role in protecting the enviroment and directed anyone who would like more information to visit their website.
