Local measles cases continue to rise as Alberta surpasses the count for the U.S

Jul 14, 2025 | 5:08 PM

As the number of measles cases in Alberta has now surpassed those reported in the entirety of the United States, case numbers continue to grow locally.

AHS is alerting the public that an infectious person was in public at the Service Plus Inn and Suites hotel from July 6 at 10 p.m. to July 7 at noon.

Now, anyone who was at the hotel during that time and has not received their vaccination is at risk of developing the disease.

If measles symptoms develop, AHS asks that you stay home and call the hotline at 1-844-944-3434.

When discussing growing measles case numbers in Alberta, two infectious disease experts, Dr. Craig Jenne, an immunology and infectious disease professor at the University of Calgary, and Dr. Lynora Saxinger, an infectious diseases specialist with the University of Alberta; agreed that “it’s unlikely Alberta or other provinces dealing with measles outbreaks will be able to get transmission under control before the fall, which is when Canada could lose its long-held measles eradication status.”

Dr. Jenne then alluded to the potential of other countries implementing travel recommendations and vaccine requirements for those visiting Canada.

“Those things can impact things as far-ranging as tourism to amateur sport visits, to even business meetings if Canada is seen as an infection risk to other countries’ populations,” he said.

“This is something we really need to avoid, but it is not looking very likely, at least in the short term.”

The province has now seen 1,314 cases since the beginning of March.
