Grande Prairie RCMP investigation led to an “officer-involved shooting”

Grande Prairie RCMP have provided an update on an officer-involved shooting that took place last night, (Friday, July 18).

Earlier today (Saturday, July 19), Mounties made the public aware of the shooting and said it took place in a “rural area” outside the City, and there is no risk to the public.

Now, in an update from RCMP, they said the incident began when they tried to pull over a vehicle last night at 11:50 p.m., but it fled.

According to RCMP, shortly after fleeing, the vehicle became stuck in the mud and when officers approached, the male driver “produced a firearm.”

“During the confrontation, at least one officer discharged their service weapon, and the suspect was struck.”

Officers took life-saving measures, and both EMS and STARS were called to the scene; however, when EMS arrived, the suspect was declared deceased.

At this time, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over this investigation to evaluate “the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police during this investigation.”

Grande Prairie RCMP said in the release that they “believe in processes that seek the facts, and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable.”

“This is why, as soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process.”

Along with ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP has also begun its own internal review process to gather as much information as possible.

At this time, no more updates are expected.
