Peace Country historian David Leonard passes away

Well-known Peace Country historian David Leonard has died.

An obituary posted to social media says Leonard died in Edmonton on July 3 “after a brief illness.” He was 80 years old.

The obituary says he was born in Fairview and raised in Sexsmith.

Leonard authored several books on the history of the Peace Country.

He also served as the provincial archivist for Alberta from 1993 to 1996 and in other archivist positions with the province, the Northwest Territories, and the City of Edmonton.

A memorial will be held at a future date.
