Medical camp for young people underway in Grande Prairie

Jul 23, 2025 | 2:22 PM

A medical camp for 50 students from the Peace in on until Friday, July 25, in Grande Prairie.

They are learning about working in medicine from students from the University of Alberta’s medicine program.

A release from the U of A says the Asclepius Medical Camp for Youth is “designed to break down barriers and inspire youth from underrepresented and low-income backgrounds to consider becoming doctors.”

The camp participants will learn some basic things, like suturing and working through some scenarios.

The camp participants are in Grades 9-12.

Most of the students taking part are from Grande Prairie, but there were also campers from Sexsmith, Clairmont, Valleyview, Fox Creek and Cold Lake.

The release says this is taking place not long before the launch of the Northern Alberta Medical Program.

The first 30 students in the Grande Prairie-based program to train future doctors will start in August.
