Saddle Hills County declares agricultural disaster

Jul 25, 2025 | 3:11 PM

Saddle Hills County has declared an agricultural disaster because of what it calls in a news release “the severe nature of the ongoing drought conditions” in this area.

The release says soil moisture conditions are low to extremely low.

Saddle Hills County also says that all elevator operators say more rain is needed before crops start to fill or yield potential will continue to decline.

The release adds, “the Peace Region will need ongoing, regular periods of rain” and that temperatures have been higher than normal.

That release also says that some areas have had less than one third of the precipitation they normally get and that all this comes after drought in previous years.

Officials say the drought is hurting and raising concerns about having enough feed for livestock in the fall and winter.

The County of Grande Prairie has also declared an agricultural disaster. The MD of Greenview made a similar declaration for the livestock industry.
