AHS reporting blue-green algae at Moonshine Lake

Aug 2, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Alberta Health Services is warning that cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae has been identified in the waters of Moonshine Lake.

Visitors to the lake are advised to avoid all contact with algae blooms and to not swim or wade in the waters.

It is also recommended that people avoid feeding fish or fish trimmings from the lake to pets, and limit human consumption of the fish as well.

The algae is naturally occurring and becomes visible when weather conditions are calm, resembling scum, grass clipping, or globs on the water surface.

Anyone who comes in contact with cyanobacteria, or ingests it, may experience rashes, sore throats, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting.

Anyone who suspects they have a problem related to blue-green algae should call Health Link at 811.
