City of Grande Prairie to action Vegetation Management Program

Aug 6, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie will start wildfire mitigation work on public land on Friday, August 8.

This is being done as part of the city’s Vegetation Management Program, which was funded by a $101,205 grant from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta in February 2024.

Starting on Friday, crews will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. over ten days to thin dense brush and remove dead or “fire-prone” trees and plant-life in the South Bear Creek ball diamonds, Country Club West and Wedgewood areas.

Mayor Jackie Clayton called this initiative an “important investment in the safety and resilience of our city.

“By taking proactive steps to reduce wildfire risks near our neighbourhoods, we’re protecting homes, natural spaces and vital community infrastructure for generations to come.”

The city anticipates this project to take ten days to complete, weather depending.

During the work, the city says residents may experience some trail impacts near the ball diamonds and Country Club West.
