East coast-flavoured fund raiser for local youth darts players heading to international competitions

Aug 14, 2025 | 6:00 AM

A fundraiser is being done through the Grande Prairie branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for a pair of darts players that have qualified for international events.

Fourteen-year-old Shaelyn Boone will be part of Team Canada at the World Cup next month in Seoul, South Korea. Boone is the Number 1-ranked youth dart player in Canada.

Sixteen-year-old Saylee Blois will compete at the World Masters in Budapest, Hungary at the end of October. She is currently ranked Number 5 in the country.

Saylee’s mom Jamie Blois is also the Legion manager.

“Shaelyn went to nationals this year and Saylee went to nationals last year, so they’ve done a little bit of travelling for darts, but this is the first time that they will be travelling internationally to compete for Canada.”

The fund raiser is selling Newfie Cold Plates.

“We have a very kind crew of people who are going to be coming in and making a traditional Newfie Cold Plate (with) ham, turkey, all the potato salads.”

“We’re doing it by pre-order. You can call the Legion or message them on Facebook and order whatever plates, however many you’d like. They’re $20 a plate.”

Blois adds having two players go to these competitions is “a pretty big deal” as youth darts only started in the last couple of years.

“The youth dart league is provided by the Legion, so there’s no cost to play and anybody can come learn darts and enjoy it.”

“The girls also play; there’s an adult Tuesday night league that they compete in and a Friday night Jitney Darts (competition) that happens that they are usually here playing in as well.”

Blois says a new youth league will start some time this fall and anyone who wants to come is welcome.

The Legion can be reached at 780-532-3110 or through social media for anyone who wants to order some cold plates.

People are asked to place their orders by Aug. 20.

Pick-up will be on Aug. 23 from 5-6:30 p.m.
