Fire advisory lifted as wildfire hazard in the GPFA drops to low

The fire advisory for both the City of Grande Prairie and Grande Prairie Forest Area has been lifted.

The wildfire danger rating is now low.

Authorities are crediting the recent rain for the drop from a moderate rating a few days ago. The weather has also cooled in recent days.

The Daily Data report from Environment and Climate Change Canada says Grande Prairie has recorded 4.8 millimetres of rain so far in August.

They also say lightning caused a small fire located 57 kilometres northwest of Grande Prairie on Tuesday.

Firefighters, a helicopter and heavy equipment were called in. The fire turned out to be small, about 0.2 hectares in size, and is listed as under control.

Since Jan. 1, the Grande Prairie Forest Area has had 99 wildfires, scorching 5,884 hectares.
