Harvest has started in the Peace Country, according to the newest crop report from Alberta Agriculture and AFSC,

The report dated August 12 says 1.9 per cent of the major crops has been harvested by that date.

That is well above the five-year average of 0.4 per cent and the 10-year average of 0.3 per cent.

The breakdown by crop is 6.4 per cent for dry peas, 6.3 per cent of barley, 1.7 for spring wheat, 1.4 per cent for oats and 0.1 per cent for canola.

Across Alberta, harvest completion for all crops is at two per cent.

The report also says that 25 per cent of the crops in the Peace are in good or excellent condition.

The first cut of haying is done. Yields averaged 1.2 tons per acre, below the five-year average of 1.4 tons.

Infestations of both grasshoppers and lygus bugs are above threshold levels.
