School zones to tentatively go into effect this week

With back-to-school season upon us, residents are being reminded that school zones go into effect Thursday, Aug. 28, in the Peace Region.

These 30km/h zones will be in effect Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on days kids are in class.

The City noted that drivers may see busy crosswalks and more pedestrians moving around this time of year, and asked them to use caution.

However, this school year could be different from previous, as a looming teacher’s strike could go into effect as early as next week.

If that does happen, school zones will then be removed until the strike or lockout is over.

When discussing the possibility of a strike, Alberta Teachers’ Association President Jason Schilling said they are hopeful, but “there are a number of issues that need to be settled if this week’s talks are to be successful.”

He referenced unacceptable pay, classroom conditions, crowding and resources for students as key points that led to a 95 per cent vote to strike by Alberta teachers back in June.

Mediated talks begin Tuesday, Aug. 26 and stretch until Friday, Aug. 29, and Schilling says if a tentative deal is reached, a ratification vote would be held in a matter of weeks.

If no deal is reached, Schilling says the union will consider its next steps, which could include a province-wide strike as early as next week; but they do have until Oct. 7 to make a final decision.
