Vice-President of new GP cycle club calls the inaugural season “a success”

A local cycling club is wrapping up its first official season.

Stealth Cycling, which began operating in the spring, is finishing up a very successful inaugural year on both the competitive and social side, according to Club Vice-President Wilf Marquis.

“Everybody did well, and I think we’re assuming that we’re gonna have the same roster as next year and then possibly some new additions as well.”

Marquis said he expects the club’s growth to only continue, especially with the reach they have; “the club itself in Grande Prairie is growing, we have riders in Fort St. John, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie. As far as the club goes, we’re kind of everything outside those big cities.”

Locally, he expects multiple new riders to join the social side of the club come next season due to its increasing popularity, and flexible group rides.

On the competitive side, Wilf says they got off to a hot start.

“Mid-July, there were three of us on the same team in the top ten standings, we were very successful getting points and hitting podiums.”

Multiple riders for the team also found success, moving up divisions over the summer; “Nigel Ray from Fort St. John, he’s moved up from Category 3 to Category 1-2, and then we had Brooke in Cat 4, she moved up this year, she got her upgrade as well and then everybody else, they’re all very close to their upgrades.”

To encourage those thinking about joining the club and taking up competitive cycling, Marquis shared a story about one of the club’s first-year competitors:

Personally, Wilf also had some of his own highlights this season:

Wilf adds that he also got to compete at the tour of Thunder Bay in front of his in-laws this year, and finished first in the hill climb event, 32 seconds faster than the next rider.

Now to finish off the season, Marquis and some of his club members are raising money to help kids fight cancer through the Great Cycle Challenge.

“I set my goal to be 1,300 kilometres this year, and I have about 224 kilometres remaining.” (As of the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 26)

This is something he has now done since 2022, and usually kicks off for him down in Calgary at the Tour De Bowness.

“As previous years, Tour De Bowness weekend for me kicks off that challenge, but this year I was battling a cold, (so I was) coming back trying to recover. (This led to) a bit of a slow start, so the last couple of weeks I’ve been picking it up.”

Marquis said his wife was one of his biggest motivators in getting him back out on the road putting on kilometres again, when he wasn’t sure if he was going to meet the goal.

So far, he has raised $559 for kids fighting cancer, and anyone wanting to contribute to his cause, click here.
