Highlights from Monday’s meeting of Grande Prairie City Council

Sep 9, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie City Council met on Monday, Sept. 8.

– Council approved referring a $70,000 item for design work on a paving project to 2026 budget deliberations. This would include paving on 101 Street between 124 to 132 Avenues and on 128 Avenue between 100 and 101 Streets. City administrators say $70,000 would cover about 30 per cent of the design cost. They add this would be enough to get a cost estimate for the paving work.

– Council approved having administration submit a couple of grant applications. One would see the city get funding from the province to hire a consultant to come up with a Regional Volunteer Management Plan for the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership. The other would go to the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta to continue vegetation management work in the South Bear area and to extend this work into Muskoseepi Park up to the area around the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

– Council approved having administration go ahead with some minor changes to an agreement to provide land in the Smith area to Smith Social. The organization needed the charges to secure financing. Construction on a new, 160 unit housing facility has been underway for several months.

– Mayor Jackie Clayton read out a pair of proclamations. One was for Welcoming Week, set for September 12 to 21. The annual effort aims to encourage communities to be more inclusive and welcoming to everyone. The other is for Rail Safety Week set for September 15-21. The proclamation says there were 261 incidents on rail crossing and rail lines since 2024. Those resulted in 68 deaths and 58 serious injuries, all of which were avoidable.

– Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Ron Wiebe presented the city with 2025 Minister’s Award for Municipal and Public Library Excellence. The city was recognized in the Red Tape Reduction Service Delivery Enhancement category. The city combined three building permit applications into one and moved everything from paper to electronic documents.

Municipal election day is set for October 20. The new council will take the Oath of Office on October 27. The current councillors have one more meeting before the election, a Council Committee of the Whole meeting set for September 17.
