County of Grande Prairie Council Candidate Profile: Geri Blew

Sep 29, 2025 | 3:10 PM

County of Grande Prairie Council Candidate Profile:

Geri Blew is one of 3 residents running in Division 6 for a County Council position.

She was asked to answer the following four questions with a 600-word limit.

1. What has inspired you to run for mayor/council/school trustee in the Oct. 20, 2025, municipal election?

I have lived and worked in our area for many years, and I have seen firsthand both the strengths and the struggles of our community. I believe rural residents deserve a strong, dependable voice at the council table. The challenges of rising costs, service expectations, and planning for the future are real, and they demand leaders who will listen and advocate. I am running because I want to ensure that decisions made at the County level reflect the needs of the people who live and work here.

2. What skills or experience do you have that you feel would make you a good fit for the role?

My background combines both hands-on community involvement and professional experience that requires listening, problem-solving, and building consensus. I am used to working with diverse groups of people to find practical solutions that balance today’s realities with tomorrow’s opportunities. I am approachable, willing to hear every perspective, and committed to clear communication. These are the skills I believe residents expect from a councillor.

3. What do you feel are the key or main election issues in your community, and what are the issues of priority for you?

The top concerns I hear from residents fall into four main areas:

· Supporting Local Livelihoods – Many in our area rely on farming and rural businesses. Ongoing dry conditions and high costs have created challenges, and council must do its part to support stability without adding unnecessary burdens.

· Infrastructure and Services – From road maintenance to emergency response, people want reliable services that match the taxes they pay. Council must prioritize maintaining and improving rural roads, ensuring snow removal is timely, and supporting emergency services that rural residents can depend on.

· Water Sustainability – Protecting water sources for households, businesses, and farms is critical. Council must work with residents to safeguard water quality, improve water management practices, and plan for long-term sustainability so that our community remains resilient in the face of changing conditions.

· Responsible Spending and Transparency – Many residents are concerned about getting good value for their tax dollars. My priority is to make sure County budgets are managed responsibly, and that residents clearly understand where their money is going and why.

These issues are not separate—they are connected. Reliable services and secure water are essential for healthy communities, and all of this depends on a County government that is accountable and transparent.

4. Where can people learn more about you?

I will be hosting an open house and will also be meeting with residents throughout Division 6 over the coming weeks. I encourage anyone with questions or concerns to reach out to me directly. Listening to residents is the most important part of this role, and I welcome every conversation.
