More than 800 speeding tickets issued in school zones from August 28-September 12

Grande Prairie Enforcement Services more than 800 speeding tickets were handed out in school zones in late August and early September.

Enforcement Services says i a news release that 805 violations were recorded in school zones between August 28 and September 12.

The release goes on to say that 109 of those tickets were issued by peace officers, the rest by Automated Traffic Enforcement.

Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman there has been what he calls “a significant increase” in school zone speeding since last September,

“Our Peace Officers have been spending time daily in school zones to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. The safety of our children is of the utmost importance, and we urge drivers to reduce their speed throughout the city, especially when they are in school and playground zones.”

Enforcement Services is offering the following advice for drivers.

School & Playground Zone Reminders

  • School zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days.
  • Playground zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset.
  • The maximum speed limit in both school and playground zones is 30 km/h.

Road Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Always obey the 30 km/h speed limit in school and playground zones.
  • Stay alert at intersections and crosswalks where pedestrians may suddenly appear.
  • Watch for school safety patrollers and follow their directions.
  • Use caution when backing out of driveways and parking stalls.
  • Never pass another moving vehicle within a school or playground zone during active hours.
  • Be aware of students riding bicycles or other wheeled devices.

Parking & Drop-Off Safety

Enforcement Services is also monitoring parking behaviour around schools. Common violations include:

  • Parking within five metres of a crosswalk or intersection.
  • Stopping or parking in “No Stopping” or “No Parking” zones.
  • Parking on sidewalks.
  • Parking against the flow of traffic (left wheels to curb).
