Municipal Election

Candidate profile: Jason Jones

Oct 6, 2025 | 2:32 PM

Jason Jones is one of the candidates running for mayor in Grande Prairie.

What has inspired you to run for Mayor in the Oct. 20, 2025, municipal election?

Grande Prairie is my lifelong home (less 2 years living in Vancouver) I was raised here, and for more than 45 years I’ve been part of this community through its growth, challenges, and change. What inspires me to run for Mayor is simple: our city is at a turning point, and we need leadership that faces reality head-on while uniting people around real solutions.

I’ve seen families in our city struggle with hunger—not in the abstract, but up close. I’ve been on the frontline helping single mothers find school snacks for their children. Phoning every food provider I could, only to hit wall after wall. In the end, reaching into my own pocket to buy a box of cookies—even while I was barely getting by myself—because no child should go to school hungry. That’s not trickle down leadership from City Hall. That’s survival on the ground. And the truth is, this isn’t a one-time story.

I’m running because I believe Grande Prairie can be more than a city where people live. It can be a community where every resident has purpose, value, and hope.

What skills or experience do you have that you feel would make you a good fit for the role?

I bring a unique blend of community service and professional expertise.

On the community side, I’ve worked with seniors—providing chapel services, listening to their stories, and learning from their wisdom. I’ve spent time with our youth, encouraging them to grow into leaders who see Grande Prairie as their future. And I’ve welcomed newcomers, reminding them they belong here when they’ve felt unwanted. These experiences taught me the importance of unity and purpose.

Professionally, I am a globally recognized supply chain professional with over a decade of experience, from building ground-up projects to teaching the next generation of supply chain leaders. I also bring real-world, regionally focused small business lobby experience, having worked as a district manager on projects with the CFIB. My most meaningful experience is in workforce development under contract to Ministry of Community and Social Services. Working with adults who faced barriers to employment – coaching and encouraging them. My career has taught me how to manage complex systems, budgets, and logistics, but also to respect and empower the people who make it all possible.

If we do our jobs right, we don’t just balance books—we create more jobs. That’s the kind of leadership I’ll bring to City Hall.

What do you feel are the key or main election issues in your community and what are the issues of priority for you?

The issues we face are urgent and clear:

Food and housing security. Families shouldn’t be wondering where their next meal comes from or if they’ll have a roof over their heads. Addressing these basics is step one. We fight homelessness by keeping people in their homes.

Economic growth and diversification. Grande Prairie has to move beyond relying only on traditional industries or waiting for a magical pipeline to balance our books. By supporting small businesses by reducing red tape, attracting advanced manufacturing, grains/pulse processing, and circular economy initiatives – we can build a resilient economy with good jobs.

Safety and trust. People deserve to feel safe in their homes and businesses. That means strong enforcement against crime through clear policing priorities and a properly equipped police service, combined with real pathways for recovery and prevention when it comes to addiction and social challenges.

My top priorities as Mayor are clear:

Strengthen community unity by tackling food, housing, and employment.

Build long-term economic resilience through diversification and aggressive development actions.

Restore safety and trust in every neighborhood and business district.
