City of Grande Prairie downgrades to a fire advisory

Oct 6, 2025 | 2:32 PM

The City of Grande Prairie has downgraded its fire restriction to an advisory as of 1 p.m. today (Monday, Oct. 6)

Even though the danger level has dropped, City of Grande Prairie Fire Marshall Chris Renyck warns that there is still a risk of wildfires “It may not seem like much, but it only takes one spark in the wrong place to put homes and lives at risk; We continue to see fires start from something as simple as a cigarette tossed along a walking trail.”

They joined the County, which lowered its level to an advisory last week.

Now, residents are allowed backyard fire pits, and both gas-powered, wood pellet or charcoal barbecues; however, the City does ask residents to use caution.

They are also reminding residents fires can spread quickly in times of high winds, so burning is prohibited when winds reach speeds of 15 km/h or greater.

According to the City, this advisory “is in place to reduce the risk of preventable human-caused wildfires.”

Anyone wanting more information or updates regarding current wildfire conditions can visit the City’s website or Alberta Fire Bans.
