County of Grande Prairie updated 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy

Oct 8, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Heading into the fall, the County of Grande Prairie has updated its 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy to highlight its “commitment to reducing wildfire risk.”

According to the County, this strategy focuses “on practical measures residents, landowners, and businesses can take to reduce wildfire risk.”

County Reeve Bob Marshall added that “protecting our communities from wildfire is a shared responsibility.”

The updated strategy now includes three key elements:

  • Fuel Management: continued FireSmart™ treatments and fuel reduction efforts in high-risk areas, especially the Wapiti Dunes region.
  • Community Preparedness: enhanced collaboration with residents, businesses, and industry partners to improve prevention, readiness, and response.
  • Public Education: expanded outreach through workshops, trade shows and open houses to promote FireSmart™ principles and wildfire prevention.

County Reeve Bob Marshall says, “by working together, we strengthen our ability to safeguard the people, property, and landscapes that make our region unique.”
