Peace Region municipalities included in livestock tax deferral program

Oct 8, 2025 | 1:41 PM

Nearly all the municipalities in the Peace have been deemed designated regions under the federal government’s 2025 Livestock Tax Deferral program

The only exception is Clear Hills County, which is considered a buffered designated region. Ranchers there are still eligible for the tax deferrals.

Producers who sell all or part of their breeding herds because of drought, flooding or too much moisture are allowed to defer part of the income from the sale when they file their tax return.

The government’s website says to qualify, at least 15 per cent of the herd has to be sold. In cases where 15-30 per cent of the animals have been shipped, 30 per cent of net sale income can be deferred.

If it is more than 30 per cent of the herd, 90 per cent of sale income can be deferred to another tax year.

A map showing designated and buffered designated regions can be found here.
