ASIRT concludes investigation into officer-involved shooting

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team has concluded an investigation into an RCMP shooting resulting in death in Grande Prairie, dating back to Oct. 15, 2023.

ASIRT’s investigation found five officers fired at a man standing in front of his common-law partner’s home, as he had a no-contact order in place, and was refusing to leave, intoxicated, and armed with a hunting rifle without bullets, according to the common-law partner.

In videos captured by witnesses, the victim is heard to be telling cops to shoot him, before pointing a hunting rifle at police.

A total of 15 shots were fired by five officers, with eight striking the man, who succumbed to his injuries. The other seven hit the house, where the common-law partner and four children were residing.

No other injuries were reported

utside of one death, and ASIRT did find the officers’ force was justified given the circumstances.
