Local athlete preparing for first international competition

A Grade 11 student at Peace Wapiti Academy has her sights set on representing Canada on the international stage.

Indy Dorscheid is training to be a skeleton slider after being identified as having potential in the sport at an RBC Training Ground stop in Grande Prairie.

The 16-year-old has spent a couple of weeks training in Whistler this month.

“This is kind of a surprise for me because it’s a really unique sport.”

“I didn’t think I would be in this sport ever, but I got selected to be into it and I’m really lovin’ it.”

Dorscheid says a manager with her club team in volleyball told the players to go to RBC Training Ground.

She will soon take part in her first competition in Park City, Utah at the end of the month. This event will be an International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation race.

Dorscheid says she is excited for the race, but it can also be a nervous time to slide on a new track.

“You can’t really prepare for sliding necessarily, but for the running portion of it, I do a bunch of warm-ups and some workouts for that.”

“You can do some visualizations. That’s a really big component of the sport is to visualize how your run is going on the track, and yes, lots of video review.”

Dorscheid says it can be hard to balance skeleton with school, but adds she has to be a good student before being a good athlete.

“I always bring my school work and everything I own to Whistler, and I always ask my teachers what can I do to get ahead and make sure I am on top of my homework.”

Dorscheid says her teachers have been very supportive and helpful in her athletic career. She says her coaches have also been supportive and generous.

She says “that would be lovely” if asked if she would like to compete in the Olympics someday.
